Dr. Leonardo Simão

Dr. Leonardo Simão, Chairman

Dr. Simão graduated in Medicine at Eduardo Mondlane University, Maputo, in 1980. He was subsequently awarded a Masters Degree in Public Health by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. After serving as District Health Director, Xai-Xai District, Gaza Province, he joined the Frelimo government in 1982 as Director of Health in Zambezia Province. He served as Minister of Health from 1988 to 1994, when he was elected to Parliament and appointed as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation by President Joaquim Chissano. He served as Mozambique’s Foreign Minister for 11 years, retiring from active politics in 2005 to become Executive Director of the Joaquim Chissano Foundation. He is Chairman of United Bank of Africa, a former Non-Executive Director of African Banking Corporation (Mozambique) and a Member of the SADC Mediation Team for Madagascar. Dr Simão is a founding member of the Medical Association of Mozambique and member of the Mozambique Medical Council.

Nuno Thomas

Nuno Thomas, Director

Nuno Tomas has 22 years experience in international affairs. He holds an Honours degree from the Instituto Superior de Relaçōes Internationais, Maputo, Mozambique, and a Masters Degree in Foreign Affairs and Trade from Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. A career diplomat, he served from 1991 to 1999 in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Co-operation of Mozambique, in Maputo, and, from 1999 to 2005, as First Secretary, Head of Chancery and Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Mozambique to the United Nations in New York. Nuno took leave of absence from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in April 2005 to become Senior Adviser to Former President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano. In this role, he has been involved in special political missions across Africa on behalf of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN), the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), the International Crisis Group (ICG) and the Africa Forum of Former African Heads of State and Government. These missions were focussed on Conflict Resolution, Mediation and Negotiation; Peace and Security; Sustainable Development; Leadership, Accountability and Good Governance. Nuno has been serving as Senior Adviser to the SADC Mediator on Madagascar since 2009 and as a Senior Adviser of the Head of the Mediation Team on the Malawi/Tanzania Boundary Dispute over Lake Malawi/Nyasa, since early 2013.

Nigel Morgan

Nigel Morgan, Director

Educated at Cranleigh School, The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and Durham University, Nigel served in the Irish Guards and at the Centre for Policy Studies in London during the premiership of Margaret Thatcher. For the past 20 years he has specialised in advising North American and European multinational corporations, financial institutions and private clients on political and security issues related to foreign direct investment across the African continent.

Joe van der Walt

Joe van der Walt, Director

As a former officer in the South African military intelligence, Joe has specialised in private-sector security in Africa and the Middle-East for the past 12 years. He has particular expertise in the oil, gas and mining sectors and has operated in Angola, the DRC, Liberia, Madagascar, Zambia, South Africa, Somalia and the oil fields of Kurdish-controlled Northern Iraq. He has also been responsible for the implementation and management of high level security for asset protection and personnel for a well-known United States communications company operating in Africa and the Middle-East.
